The waterfront playgrounds
Frank Kitts Park and the wider waterfront strip have some of the best free playground
infrastructure in the city — flat, pram-friendly, and close enough to a dozen cafés that "we forgot
snacks" isn't a crisis. In warmer months the splash areas turn a normal walk into a full outing
without you spending a cent.
Wellington Botanic Garden
Free to enter, genuinely huge, and forgiving of every age group at once — toddlers can toddle on
the flatter paths near the entrance while older kids run ahead on the tracks further up. The
playground near the Founders Entrance is a reliable stop, and if you time it right, the cable car ride
up (small fee) turns the whole thing into a mini-adventure rather than "just the park."
Bolton Street Memorial Park
Quieter and less obvious than the Botanic Garden next door, which is exactly why it's worth
knowing about. Good for a slower wander with a baby carrier or for kids who like poking around
old headstones and reading names out loud (ours do, no judgement).
Oriental Bay in any weather
On a fine day, it's the obvious beach and playground combo. On a blustery one, it's still worth the
walk — watching the waves come over the sea wall is free entertainment that never seems to get
old for under-10s
.
Library storytime and holiday programmes
Wellington's council libraries run regular free sessions for young kids, and holiday-specific
programmes during school breaks. Check your local branch's calendar — these fill a weekday
morning without costing anything and double as a chance for you to sit down for ten minutes.
Skate parks and scooter tracks
If your kids are past the toddler stage, Waitangi Park's skate and scooter areas are free, well used,
and a good way to burn an hour of energy before a wet afternoon indoors.
**A practical note:** "free" days out in Wellington tend to work best with a packed lunch and a
flexible plan — the weather can turn an outdoor free activity into an indoor pivot with about fifteen
minutes' notice, so keep a rainy-day backup from our other guides in your back pocket.
