Blossom Valley

Step under a canopy of pink at Aston Norwood Gardens, home to New Zealand's highest number and density of mature cherry blossom trees in one place. Spread across 14 acres in Kaitoke, Upper Hutt, over 300 Sakura cherry blossom trees — first planted in 1994 by owners Mark and Fiona Rammell after a trip to Japan — burst into bloom each spring for this short-lived, must-see event. Daytime sessions let you wander around 1km of garden trails (allow 1.5–2 hours), enjoy a picnic-style visit, and grab food from the onsite café, Stables Eatery, or the new Duke Restaurant & Bar. In the evenings, the "After Dark" light experience transforms the gardens with illuminated trails, hot food, and a hot chocolate booth. Extras include high tea, Devonshire tea, grazing platters, a garden centre and nursery, seasonal merchandise, and even onsite chalet accommodation for those wanting to wake up surrounded by blossoms. Peak bloom is typically expected around 21–30 September, though exact timing depends on the weather each year. Tickets are sold in timed sessions and weekends sell out fast — pre-booking online is strongly recommended, as cars without prebooked tickets may be turned away.
