Organised by Hangdog Indoor Climbing
Looking for an exciting indoor adventure in the Wellington region? Hangdog Indoor Climbing Centre in Lower Hutt offers a fun and challenging experience for climbers of all ages and abilities. Whether you're trying climbing for the first time or you're an experienced climber, there's something here for you.
Hangdog features a wide range of top-rope walls, bouldering areas and auto-belays. Friendly staff are on hand to help beginners get started, while experienced climbers can enjoy regularly updated routes and challenges. Equipment hire is available, so families can drop in and climb without needing their own gear.
Bouldering Bouldering is low-height climbing without ropes. Our route-setters design each boulder "problem" as a 3D puzzle for your mind and body to solve. Each problem follows a set colour of holds to the top of the wall, with start and finish holds marked by coloured tags. It's up to you to work out how to get from start to finish. The colour of the tag shows the difficulty, so climbers can choose problems that suit their level.
Rope Climbing New climbers on the high walls begin with top rope. You're tied into a rope that runs to the ceiling and back down to your belayer, which is the safest form of rope climbing, as the furthest you can fall is about half a metre. Rope climbing requires more endurance than bouldering and is less dynamic. When you reach the top of a route, your belayer can lower you down so you can try another.
Perfect for families Children can climb with appropriate supervision, making Hangdog a great option for weekends, school holidays and rainy days. Kids aged 8–15 can also join our afterschool climbing club, Stone Monkeys.
Stone Monkeys After-School Kids' Climbing Club (ages 8–15) (Confirm pricing with the organisers). Stone Monkeys is Hangdog's after-school climbing club for kids. Classes run every weekday after school during the school term. Sessions are all about having fun, making new friends, playing games, completing climbing challenges and learning technique along the way.
Focus: mainly bouldering (low-height climbing). Children aged 8 and over can also learn and practise belaying each other on the high walls. Ages 13–15: groups are slightly more self-directed, with a focus on improving climbing ability and practising more advanced techniques.
